For the first time in 35 years, soybeans were expected to be the most planted agricultural crop in the United States, according to the USDA. Soybeans traditionally come in second to corn as the most planted crop in the U.S.
The USDA reported that farmers intended to plant 89 million acres of soybeans and 88 million acres of corn in 2018. The decision came down to profits. Soybeans, which cost on average
about 65 percent less to plant than corn, are expected to have a better return than corn. Corn costs more to plant because of fertilizer and disease and pest control requirements.
Eighty percent of soybeans are grown in the upper Midwest. U.S farmers typically grow soybeans in crop rotation with corn. The top soybean producing states are Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota.
Soybeans were one of the first crops that achieved commercial success as bioengineered crops, possessing a gene that is herbicide resistant. The first genetically modified soybeans were planted in the U.S. in 1996.
